The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) announced that five new cases of Legionnaires’ disease had been confirmed in the cluster affecting upper Manhattan, increasing the number of people sickened to 27.

Three of the cluster’s victims have been hospitalized, and one person has died. The illness has infected residents of southern Washington Heights

The Legionnaires’ disease cluster that is infecting upper Manhattan has claimed its first life, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The number of infected has also more than doubled as 18 individuals have been diagnosed with the pneumonia-like illness.

The DOHMH first alerted the public about the outbreak

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) officials met with tenants of the Co-Op City complex last week to inform them that no new cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been found and the risk of contracting the disease is very low, according to a story posted on Bronx.News12.com.
